Excel Data From Picture missing? Check these places first
If you cannot find the command, start with the menu for your platform below. Inserting a picture into a worksheet does not turn its text into editable cells.
If the command is present but the result is wrong, skip to checking the picture and result. Changing converters does not guarantee better recognition.
1. Look in the right menu
Microsoft's Data From Picture instructions list these routes:
| Where you use Excel | Menu path |
|---|---|
| Windows | Data → From Picture → Picture From File or Picture From Clipboard |
| Web | Data → Data From Picture → select an image file → Open |
| Mac | Data → Data From Picture → Picture From File or Picture From Clipboard |
| Excel on a phone or tablet | Insert → Data from Picture |
Excel on the web supports this feature too. After recognition, review and correct the data before inserting it.
2. Check which installation you have
The feature article applies to Excel for Microsoft 365; it does not promise availability in every edition. For Windows, it specifies Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 1903 or later, plus Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.
Find your product and version using Microsoft's version-check instructions: on Windows, look under File → Account (or Help) for Product Information, then About Excel for more detail. On Mac, use the app menu's About command to see version and license information.
A missing button alone does not identify the cause. If your employer manages Excel, give your administrator that product/version information and the platform-specific instructions above. Do not change company security settings to enable a converter.
3. Need an editable table now?
If your input is a clear JPG or PNG of a simple table with printed English text and numbers, you can use Image to Excel without that Excel command or a converter account:
- Save the complete table as JPG or PNG, up to 10 MB per image. Keep all rows and column headings visible.
- Open the converter and select Choose images. On desktop, you can also paste a copied screenshot with Ctrl + V, or ⌘ + V on Mac, outside an editable cell.
- Wait for the Editable table beside the image. Click cells to correct values. Check column alignment, row count, decimal points, minus signs and important numbers. Yellow cells need review; unmarked cells can also be wrong.
- For an ID such as 00123, first check that recognition kept every character. Under Column types & removal, choose Keep as text for that column. This prevents numeric conversion during export; it cannot recover a zero that recognition missed.
- Select Download Excel. The button may show Preparing Excel… while export loads. Open the downloaded XLSX and check its rows and columns before using the data.
Open the image-to-Excel converter
Try an example in the converter generates one office-supplies table and runs recognition. Separately, the two-image sales example includes downloadable input images and a checked workbook. Neither is an accuracy guarantee for your table.
Check the picture and the result
If the picture command is available but values land in the wrong columns, follow the table-structure checks. They distinguish text that needs splitting from an image whose rows or columns were read incorrectly.
Retake photos with blur, glare, curved paper or missing characters. Straightening cannot recreate unreadable text. Compare the new result against the image after every retry. The recognition models can share mistakes, even when readings agree.
This converter accepts JPG and PNG, not PDF uploads. Handwriting, receipts, other languages and complex nested headings are outside its current supported scope. Image and table content are processed in your browser; website scripts and recognition models still download. See Privacy for network and optional usage-count details.
Have several matching table images?
Add up to 10 images, within 30 MB in total, and review every table. Choose Combine into one sheet under Export options only when headings and column order match. Rows are appended, not summed or deduplicated. For different tables, choose One sheet per image. Follow the multiple-image steps and inspect the combined result.
